Chapter
Thirteen
Betsy paid her bill and left, promising to wait for my call before she met up with Edna. I was almost finished with mine when Hunter strode in, pausing to let his eyes adjust. His large frame blocked half the light that streamed around him.
âHey, handsome!â I said when he got to me. I washed down a bite of burger with a drink of tea before I gave him a quick welcome kiss. âWhatâs a nice boy like you doinâ in a place like this?â
Monty, who was wiping down the bar where Betsy had eaten, cast me a sideways grin. âProbably lookinâ for trouble in the form of an ornery redhead. We all tried to warn him when he first started gazinâ at you all calf-eyed, but he wouldnât listen to sense.â
âYou hush,â I said, flapping a hand at him, then made an open-handed circle in front of me. âItâs not like all this isnât at least partly your fault.â
Uncle Cal had brought me in here every week for lunch, and Monty was more like an uncle than just the dude who ran the local sports bar.
Rather than reply, he glanced at Hunter. âI assume youâre on duty, so Coke? And do you want a burger or wings?â
âAs much as Iâd like a beer, you assume right. A cold Coke will hit the spot. As far as food, Iâll have the wings.â
âHot garlic?â Monty asked as if Hunter ever ordered anything different.
âYou got it.â Hunter settled in beside me and stole a fry from my basket.
âI donât know if youâre a brave man or a stupid one,â I said, grinning as I swatted his hand.
âMaybe a little of both,â he replied, dragging the fry through my puddle of ketchup and popping it into his piehole. âI know Iâm taking my life in my hands, but Iâm hungry enough that Iâm willing to risk it. So, what else did you find out from Betsy?â
I smacked his fingers as he dove for another fry. âEnough that between her and Caroline, weâve got a good lead to chase down. We need to talk to Edna before she hightails it out of town, and that meeting with Betsyâs probably the best time to catch her.â
I gave him the long-version rundown of our conversation along with what Caroline had told us, and he picked up his phone.
âWhoâre you callinâ?â I asked as Monty set Hunterâs wings in front of him.
âJT,â he replied, separating his wings so theyâd cool faster. âIâm gonna have him go to the Hilton. Hopefully, sheâs still there and he can make sure she sits tight until I can eat my burger. Iâm starving, but I donât want her anywhere near Betsy. And I donât want her changing her mind and bolting, either.â
âIâm sure she can wait the twenty minutes itâll take for you to scarf something down.â He had a bad habit of getting so wrapped up in his work that heâd forget to eatâsomething Iâd never be able to claim.
While he powered through his wings, I called Betsy to let her know Hunter was going to handle things.
